Wood Projects - Labours of Love for Others

Turned Bowl

Turned Mahogany Bowl

A 13 inch mahogany bowl that I made from a 14 x 14 x 4" blank for my wife for Christmas. It is finished with mineral oil. I used no filler with this open-grained wood and sanded to 1000 grit using a random orbital sander while spinning on the lathe.

Hamper

Custom Bathroom Hamper and Stool

I built this custom hamper for my wife to be used in our Oregon apartment. It is a lined stool. It has a plastic insert for dirty laundry and it is robust enough to be sit or stood upon. Very simple. Made to spec. Simple white. Clean. Utilitarian.

Copeland-esque Jewelry Box

Dresser Accessories

We bought the dresser from Copeland VT. I matched and built the jewelry box for my wife's birthday. Cherry base and drawers and a black walnut top with matching pulls. The mirror was made to match as well as the 2 candle shelves.

Tricky Joinery

Walnut Graft Splice

Before live-edge tables were a thing, I snagged 2 Claro/Black walnut mature grafts. Look closely and see the graft line. I hand fitted one into the other to form a table top with a curvy joint. My wife insisted that we keep the burl protrusion.

Spliced Walnut Table

Live Edge Dining Table

This is completed Claro/Black walnut spliced graft table. It is finished with a live edge and a polyurethane coating. The legs are cast iron from Lee Valley. It looks beautiful in our Boston apartment.

Copeland-esque waste-basket

More Dresser Accessories

We bought the dresser from Copeland VT. I matched the design to the obsolete Copeland product line. I built the matching waste basket testing new assembly methods. Cherry box and a black walnut top with walnut feet. My wife stores her treasures in that "waste basket". It also serves as a sitting stool and a step stool.

Side-Table

Custom Heavy Poplar Table

Using a set of 4 legs from a metrology instrument made in the 1930's, I made 3 green poplar shelves of progressively increasing thickness, then with progressive spacing. We used it for a TV stand due to its weight and leveling attributes. Here it is simply as side table for a hallway.

4 Link

4-Link Elevating Hinge

This wood project is a mechanism. My daughter needed a lifting coffee table and defined all the variables. This was my solution. The hinge locks in 2 positions (VIDEO), deployed and stowed. Three are used in the table in the next photo.

Bathroom Shelf

Bathroom Shelf

My wife needed a certain size shelf for our apartment in Oregon. We needed some in our home in Halifax as well. So I got the specs from her and made 3 shelves at once with no doors, painted white. I boxed them up with the clothes hamper and checked them as luggage to Oregon. (Custom box required)

Computer Table

Computer Table / Vanity

I began making a vanity to match the bedroom suite. The vanity top was adequate for a temporary computer table in Oregon. We found old school desk legs and adapted them for the computer table... for now. The grain pattern is amazing. The vanity will be beautiful.

Place Keeper

Place Keeper

We bought the dresser from Copeland VT. I matched and built the jewelry box for my wife's birthday. Cherry base and drawers and a black walnut top with matching pulls. The mirror was made to match as well as the 2 candle shelves.

Lifting Table

Lifting-Top Coffee Table

This is a lifting-top coffee table totally defined by my daughter. She used low grade wood from the Home Depot. The table locks up. It also locks down. No latches were allowed. The wood hinges contain Oil-lite bronze bushings and steel pins.

About Me

I am a catholic man, a husband, a father, a professional engineer, an amateur wood worker, and generally a curious person. I love making things for other people. More than that, I love meeting people and making new acquaintances. Life is short.
